چکیده
Abstract. A decline in Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) strength has been observed between 2004 and 2012 by the RAPID-MOCHA-WBTS (RAPID – Meridional Overturning Circulation Heatflux Array Western Boundary Time Series, hereafter RAPID array) with this weakened state of AMOC persisting until 2017. Climate model paleo-oceanographic research suggests that may have declining for decades or even centuries before this; however direct observations are sparse prior to 2004, giving only “snapshots” circulation. Previous studies used linear models based on upper-layer temperature anomalies extend estimates back time; these ignore changes deep beginning emerge decline. Here we develop a higher-fidelity empirical variability data associated physically thickness persistent upper, intermediate, water masses at 26∘ N transports. We applied historical hydrographic create an time series extending from 1981 2016. Increasing resolution approximately annual shows multi-annual agreement downturn 2008 was weakest since mid-1980s. However, no overall as indicated other proxies high-resolution climate models. Our results reinforce adequately capturing is key detecting any anthropogenic climate-change-related

Atlantic Dominance of the Meridional Overturning Circulation
North Atlantic (NA) deep-water formation and the resulting Atlantic meridional overturning cell is generally regarded as the primary feature of the global overturning circulation and is believed to be a result of the geometry of the continents. Here, instead, the overturning is viewed as a global energy–driven system and the robustness of NA dominance is investigated within this framework. Usin...

Introduction: the concept of the MOC Climate models project a slow down of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) in the twenty-first century. This slow down is expected to affect climate over Europe. In particular, it damps the temperature rise due to the emission of greenhouse gases. The MOC is associated with the thermohaline circulation (ThC), which is the large-scale ocean c...
متن کاملOn the Driving Processes of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation
[1] Because of its relevance for the global climate the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) has been a major research focus for many years. Yet the question of which physical mechanisms ultimately drive the AMOC, in the sense of providing its energy supply, remains a matter of controversy. Here we review both observational data and model results concerning the two main candidates...
متن کاملOn the stability of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation.
One of the most important large-scale ocean current systems for Earth's climate is the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). Here we review its stability properties and present new model simulations to study the AMOC's hysteresis response to freshwater perturbations. We employ seven different versions of an Ocean General Circulation Model by using a highly accurate tracer advectio...

6 The zonally integrated meridional volume transport in the North Atlantic (called AMOC) 7 is described in a 19-year long ocean state estimate, one consistent with a diverse global data 8 set. Apart from a weak increasing trend at high northern latitudes, the AMOC appears 9 statistically stable over the last 19 years with fluctuations indistinguishable from those of 10 a stationary Gaussian sto...
